In the beginning of March in Tarnów, one od the most important public transport investments in recent years shall commence – building Intelligent Transport System (ITS). As a result of a tender, Sprint has been chosen as the contracting company. Sprint has a lengthy experience in building traffic management systems, for instance in Bydgoszcz, Łódź, Olsztyn, Bielsko-Biała, Wałbrzych, Chorzów, Krosno and Ostrołęka (still in progress). The cost of the implementation shall amount to about 18,5 mln PLN and shall be finished in the mid 2020.
The implementation is a part of the ongoing project „Public Transpirt Integration” which, aparto from the ITS system, involves creating Passenger Dynamic Information System or building 2 interchanges in the city. Another of its elements is Tarnów Citybike available for the citizen since last year.
- The dynamic development and investment changes that have been taking place in Tarnów prove that our city is ready to implement modern technologies, including traffic management, and those related to the idea of „Smart City” and friendly city – says Roman Ciepla – Mayor of Tarnów.
The main goal is to improve the traffic conditio in the city, especially its public transport. It is the commuters who will experience the biggest changes – there will be priority travels introduced on the crossroads and intersections for the public transport vehicles in the city. It will decrease the delays time and increase commuters’ comfort. Thanks to the priorities the red light waiting time shall be shortened for the public transport vehicles.
Thanks to implementing Traffic Management System on 32 intersections also the drivers should benefit from the change - there will be 4 coordinated roads (the so called „green wave”).
- ITS System works real-time automatically so operators/workers of the new Traffic Management Center will only control its proper functioning with a possibility to alter the settings on an ongoing basis to reduce the traffic within the given city areas. They will have a professional video wall installation at their disposal, which displays the footage from the new CCTV cameras installed on the intersections – this will make the observation of roads in Tarnów much easier – adds Waldemar Matukiewicz, Vice President of Sprint S.A.
Parking information system will be yet another facility for the drivers, which allows for finding free parking spots within the city. 10 information displays and a mobile application will navigate the drivers to reach one of the 600 parking spaces.
Drivers will be able to use variable message signs displays (VMS), located on 3 main entries to the city, which display the information about the most optimal routes leading to the chosen locations in the city, and notifying about the traffic changes or road incidents.
Citizens of Tarnów will also benefit from one of the three weather stations, which, besides the standard parameters, measure road conditions or air quality and noise level. All the listed ITS elements will be connected via 20 km fibre-optic network.
The contract for ITS in Tarnów was singed on 5th March 2019.
